Introduction and History

The Internet2 Commons accelerates the adoption of IP-based collaboration technologies for the Internet2 research and education community. Supported by and developed with its members, the Internet2 Commons has deployed an H.323 Videoconferencing Service for multi-site connections. Standards-based, vendor-neutral videoconferencing through this scalable service allows subscribing members to schedule and hold distributed working groups, classes, meetings, and conferences in support of research and education.

The Internet2 Commons encourages the large-scale deployment of tools for one-to-one, one-to-group, and group-to-group collaborations. The services provided by The Internet2 Commons are available to Internet2 members, Abilene participants, and other Internet2 partners. While The Internet2 Commons will eventually comprise a large set of collaboration services, it is initially focused on services related to videoconferencing.

The Internet2 Commons was formed in 2001 when Internet2 staff and members, along with ViDe, partnered to provide a "best effort" H.323-based videoconferencing service built on the architecture laid out by ViDeNet, with Multipoint Control Units (MCUs) provided by Radvision and Accord, hosted by member institutions Ohio State University and OARnet, and with additional MCU capacity provided by the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC). In addition, ITEC-Ohio and OARnet provided second level technical support and ViDeNet provided research and development related to the videoconferencing service.

From the onset the Internet2 Commons has been developed in coordination with Internet2 members and with international partners to ensure a global reach of the collaboration environment.
